It's Open!

On October 18, the spectacular new Georgetown Neighborhood Library opened to the public with a ribbon cutting featuring Mayor Fenty.

The new library is truly a neighborhood gem.  It is now four floors.  The basement floor was lowered 18 inches to create a light-filled children's area and conference space for up to 100 people.  The former attic now houses the Peabody Collection, with a reading room framed by gabled windows and state-of-the-art archival storage and display space.  And the outside is just as good!  The original 1930s Reading Terrace has been restored.  From the lower level, stepped gardens rise to meet Book Hill Park.  Historic woodwork has been recreated with comfortable furnishings that represent the period.  It is a space that is light, airy and filled with stunning views north and south.

This all sounds great!  But...

Frankly, we need your help. There is no government funding for restoration of Peabody books, photos, artwork or documents. We have accomplished much, but there is more to do. With the help of generous donors, we have restored 95 historic volumes, 3 paintings, all house files and provided restoration materials and supplies.  But we still have all photographs, artifacts and 20 artworks left to restore. Won't you help?

Wall of Honor!  Everybody's talking about it.  Every gift over $500 to the Georgetown library restoration effort will be recognized on a permanent Wall of Honor in the new Georgetown Library. Be a part of Georgetown history and help us fully restore this great library.  Click the Donate button and as you complete the page it will ask if you'd like to be on the Wall of Honor.

We estimate a need of an additional $125,000 to fully restore the historic collections of the Georgetown Library, the finest historic neighborhood archives in the United States – dating back three centuries.

Thank you to all those who have and will contribute!
