Frequently Asked Questions
What is the DC Public Library Foundation?
The DC Public Library Foundation enhances DC Public Library resources and programs, working to promote, in all community members, literacy and a thirst for knowledge. The Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization registered with the IRS and District of Columbia. All donations are tax-deductible for United States federal income tax purposes. Federal ID # 52-1481008.
Do you accept donations of books?
Unless it is a rare, historic, or particularly significant collection, the Foundation is unable to accept gifts of books.
Does the Foundation support programs outside the Library system?
No. The Foundation exclusively supports programs to benefit the District of Columbia Public Library system.
Can the Foundation receive bequests or trust income?
Absolutely. Leaving a gift to the Foundation creates a lasting legacy to the city and a continuing honor to the donor. For further information please contact the Foundation at 202-727-4943.
Do I have to give a gift for a specific purpose?
Not at all. A gift given “wherever most needed” gives the Library flexibility to respond to critical needs or special opportunities that arise during the year.
Can I support my branch library through the Foundation?
Absolutely. When you make a donation to the Foundation, please specify on the check or on an accompanying note which branch you would like to support. It’s that easy. However, while each branch has its own funding priorities, the Foundation emphasizes funding for the entire system, so that every resident of D.C. can take advantage of the Library’s capacity to promote literacy and engage the citizenry.
How can I be sure my donation will be used as I specify?
The Foundation has an accounting system that identifies and tracks all gifts and funds established for specific purposes.
