Frequently Asked Questions
What is the DC Public Library Foundation?
The DCPL Foundation is the private fundraising arm of the DC Public Library system. As an organization separate from the Library, the Foundation seeks private sector support for improvements and enhancements which cannot be funded through local government funding. It is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization registered with the IRS and District of Columbia. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Federal ID # 52-1481008.
Can I Support my branch library through the Foundation?
Absolutely. When you make a donation to the Foundation specify which branch you would like to support. It’s that easy. Over the years the Foundation has received both large and small gifts to support over 10 branches in the library system.
How can I be sure my donation will be used as I specify?
The Foundation has an accounting system that identifies and tracks all gifts and funds established for specific purposes. Currently, the Foundation manages 32 earmarked (or restricted) funds.
Do I have to give a gift for a specific purpose?
Not at all. A gift given “wherever most needed” gives the Library flexibility to respond to critical needs or special opportunities that arise during the year. Something new is always coming up. For instance, an original Jefferson document was found while cleaning; the American Library Association announced that DC librarian Alice Hagemeyer, the nation’s first librarian to the deaf community, would be awarded its highest honor; Scholastic announced plans for the Harry Potter Bus to visit the District. The Foundation was able to provide funds for these and other remarkable opportunities thanks to general donations.
Does the Foundation support programs outside the Library system?
No. The Foundation exclusively supports programs to benefit the District of Columbia Public Library system.
Can the Foundation receive bequests or trust income?
Absolutely. Leaving a gift to the Foundation creates a lasting legacy to the city and a continuing honor to the donor. The Foundation currently administers 11 bequests and trusts. For further information please contact Anna Velazco at 202-727-4943.
Do you accept donations of books?
Unless it is a rare, historic, or particularly significant collection, the Foundation is unable to accept gifts of books.
